Why Use Coconut Oil and Beeswax?
-
Nourishment
- Fractionated Coconut oil is a popular choice because it’s food-safe, long-lasting, and resistant to rancidity—perfect for conditioning kitchen surfaces.
- Beeswax adds a protective layer, sealing the wood and preventing water or bacteria from penetrating.
-
Natural and Organic
- Choosing organic coconut oil and natural beeswax ensures a non-toxic, food-grade finish that you can feel good about using in the heart of your kitchen.
-
Long-Lasting Protection
- The unique combination of oils and wax forms a barrier that helps keep your wooden items looking and functioning like new for longer.

- Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil

- Food Grade Orange Oil Extract, 32 oz – $29.95

Step-by-Step Recipe
If you don’t want to use a wax melter, you can also use a double boiler or heat-safe container to melt the beeswax and coconut oil together.
-
Measure Your Ingredients
- The basic ratio is 4:1 (coconut oil to beeswax).
- For a larger batch, you might use 8 ounces of coconut oil to 2 ounces of beeswax.
- Set aside 1 tablespoon of orange oil (or more for a stronger citrus scent).
-
Melt the Beeswax and Coconut Oil
- In a wax melter or double boiler or heat-safe container, melt the beeswax and coconut oil together.
- Stir occasionally to ensure even blending.
-
Add the Orange Oil
- Once the wax and oil mixture is completely melted, remove it from heat.
- Allow it to cool slightly (but not harden) before stirring in the orange oil. This preserves the essential oil’s aromatic properties.
-
Pour into Storage Containers
- Carefully pour your liquid board butter into clean, dry jars or tins.
- Let it cool and solidify fully (about 1–2 hours at room temperature).
How to Use Your Board Butter
-
Clean and Dry the Wood Surface
- Make sure your cutting board or wooden utensil is completely clean and thoroughly dry before application.
-
Apply Generously
- Using a clean cloth or paper towel, rub a small amount of the coconut oil and beeswax mixture into the wood.
- Massage in circular motions to help the board butter penetrate deeply.
-
Let it Soak
- For best results, leave it on overnight or at least a few hours.
- This allows the wood to absorb the nourishing oils and the beeswax to seal the surface.
-
Buff the Surface
- Once the oil is fully absorbed, use a soft cloth to buff off any excess.
- This step gives your board a beautiful, natural sheen without leaving it overly greasy.
Tips for Maintenance
- Regular Conditioning: Condition your cutting boards and wooden utensils at least once a month, or whenever they look dry.
- Avoid Excess Water: Never let your wood items soak in water or put them in the dishwasher.
- Refresh the Citrus Scent: If you love the bright orange aroma, feel free to add extra drops of orange oil during future melts.
